Demodectic mange

Demodex is a genus of parasitic mites that causes a skin disease, often referred to as mange or canine demodicosis. The microscopic demodex mites live in the hair follicles and oil glands of a dog's or cat's skin or at the skin surface. Dogs can also be host to sarcoptic mites. The resulting disease is often referred to as scabies.

Many pets have natural mite populations; however, most healthy animals are able to control the populations and they do not become problematic.

How will mange affect a dog?

Demodex mites create patches of hair loss and can contribute to pyoderma (skin infections). The disease can be limited to a small area of infestation (localized), which most often occurs in young dogs, or can be a more widespread (generalized) infestation.

Sarcoptic mites also cause hair loss and itching and can make a dog very uncomfortable.

How will mange affect a cat?

Demodex is less common in cats and can create patches of hair loss. Mites can also contribute to pyoderma (skin infections) and more serious skin disease.

Can humans be harmed by demodex?

Demodex from dogs and cats poses no risk to humans.
